Fatima Azzam

“At 53 years old, I am a widowed Lebanese woman with four children – made up of three daughters and one son whom I have a motherly but friendly relationship with. Having not continued my education past high school, I was a housewife for most of my life until my husband signed me up to join the Al Imad Association in 2005. The association was just starting up and my husband thoroughly encouraged me to join since it was gathering all the non-working women with no education in the village. As an association, it was difficult at first since the budget was low and we started with nothing – a lot of the women did not end up staying. Through workshops, however, we slowly became involved in the provision of seasonal agricultural products and cooking of traditional Lebanese food in the village. Over time, we became a big family at the association and I fell in love with my work and my team. I gained self-confidence and strengthened my personality through the networking. Any woman who can stand up on her feet should get up and work, no matter what it is! At home, I am able to earn a steady income as a widowed mother and I also learned to cook healthier food using more local ingredients.”
